Introduction and Focus

This GeometryWeb was created for my TIE 542 class at National Louis University.  The course is designed to assist students in an application based Geometry class.  The 12 topics that are covered work in conjunction with McDougal Littell’s Geometry 2005 textbook.

Students participating in this GeometryWeb are students who normally struggle in mathematics.  This site’s original intent is to be a reinforcement of to classroom instruction.  However, it will be continually updated, with the goal of the site existing independently of the course.

Standards

The site works with the Illinois mathematics learning standards focusing on:

ILS 9.A.3b Draw transformation images of figures, with and without the use of technology.
ILS 9.B.3 Identify describes, classify and compare two- and three- dimensional geometric figures and models according to their properties.
ILS 9.C.3b Develop and solve problems using geometric relationships and models, with and without the use of technology.
ILS 9.B.3 Identify describes, classify and compare two- and three- dimensional geometric figures and models according to their properties.
ILS 9.C.2 Formulate logical arguments about geometric figures and patterns and communicate reasoning.
ILS 9.B.2 Compare geometric figures and determines their properties including parallel, perpendicular, similar, congruent and line symmetry.
ILS 9.D.4 Analyze and solve problems involving triangles (e.g., distances which cannot be measured directly) using trigonometric ratios.
ILS 9.C.4c Develop and communicate mathematical proofs (e.g., two-column, paragraph, indirect) and counter examples for geometric statements.
ILS 9.A.4b Create perspective drawings, tessellations and scale drawings, with and without the use of technology.
ILS 9.C.4b Construct and communicate convincing arguments for geometric situations.
ILS 9.B.1a Identify and describe characteristics, similarities and differences of geometric shapes.
ILS 9.C.2 Formulate logical arguments about geometric figures and patterns and communicate reasoning.
ILS 9.C.5a Perform and describe an original investigation of a geometric problem and verify the analysis and conclusions to an audience.
ILS 9.C.4b Construct and communicate convincing arguments for geometric situations.

Process

Geometry Web is an interactive investigation of Geometry.  This Geometry site will allow you to explore a variety of Geometry topics with web-based support activities.  This is not a passive experience of pick and click, unit themes will be activated every three weeks, with subtopics posed each week.  Upon completion of the 12 Geometry Web topics students will have a better understanding of Geometry topics and their applications.

Resources Needed

  • Reliable web access for students and instructor
  • Class set of geometry text
  • E-mail accounts for students and instructor
  • All need to be registered on wikispaces

Conclusion

Upon completion of this GeometryWeb, students should have reinforcement of their classroom ideas.  The instructor is still a vital role in this process. However, I hope you find this GeometryWeb as a useful tool.  If you have any questions contact me, jvrtis@lths.net.
