solids

explore

Week 2

Now that our investigation of three-dimensional solids in completed, we will now move into exploration.  This will include manipulation and creation of a variety of solids.  In this section it is important to include screen

Start by visiting the Cool Math 3D Wire Frame Page, from the pop-up window take a look at

  • Cube
  • Sphere
  • 3 more of your choosing
  • Use the print screen option to place one of the three objects you picked on 3D Wire discussion on the GeometryWeb Wiki.
  • Include some information on who you think you would find the volume and surface area of the shape
sphere

Now survey the Platonic Solid Page

  • Look at the similarities and differences of all the solids
  • On the GeometryWeb Wiki discuss the net patterns and the differences in faces, vertices, and edges.

Then explore the Math 4 Kids Polyhedra Page

  • Look first at the 5 Platonic Solids noting their properties
  • Then examine the semi-regular and other families
  • Now return to the GeometryWeb Wiki discuss the similarities and differences of the 5 Platonic Solids, and what makes the semi-regular and other families so different.
  • If you can create your own solid post it on the GeometryWeb Wiki.

Finally look at the MathsNet Solid Page and explore

  • 3D tic-tac-toe
  • Platonic Solids
  • Pyramids
  • Views 1
  • Views 2
  • Guess the view
  • Nets
  • Building Polyhedra
  • Go to the GeometryWeb Wiki and discuss the nets and polyhedra building and how that helps you understand the solids.
